The webinar aims to provide an opportunity to share experiences, views and best practices of teaching literature to students in the context of ASEAN tertiary education. Given the diversity of cultures, languages and histories in the region, including internal diversity within each country, these experiences and the approaches of educators to the teaching of local, national, world, or comparative literatures are bound to be very different. With this meeting, we hope to learn from each other in order to develop and enhance student-centered literature pedagogies that are more inclusive and relevant for the diverse social, political, and cultural realities of the ASEAN region today.
The event will consist of:
A keynote presentation by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Suzanne Choo (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore) on "Developing ethical thinkers in a global world: Current research in ethical criticism and implications for the teaching of literature".
Short presentations/case studies on literature pedagogy by representatives of the University of the Philippines-Diliman (Philippines), Universiti Putra Malaysia (Malaysia), Universitas Jenderal Soedirman (Indonesia), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (Brunei), and Mae Fah Luang University (Thailand).
A panel debate on the challenges of teaching literature in ASEAN.
