Assistant Professor Dr. Suwichan Phatthanaphraiwan’s Research Wins Bronze Award at Thailand Research Expo 2026

The School of Liberal Arts, Mae Fah Luang University, extends its heartfelt congratulations to Assistant Professor Dr.Suwichan Phatthanaphraiwan, the research team, the Research Administration Division, and community partner networks on receiving the Bronze Award at the Thailand Research Expo 2026, held on 26 June 2026 at Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld, Bangkok.

The award-winning research project, titled “Indigenous and Ethno-Ecological Wisdom for Sustainable Environment,” was led by Assistant Professor Dr. Suwichan Phatthanaphraiwan, a lecturer at the School of Liberal Arts and Head of the Research Unit for Indigenous and Ethno-Ecological Wisdom for Sustainable Development : RIEW-SD.

The project presents a key perspective: “Thailand has not failed to extinguish forest fires; rather, it has failed to understand fire.” By integrating the traditional wisdom of ethnic communities with scientific knowledge, the research connected 27 communities across three river basins under the concept of Indigenous Fire Stewardship. This initiative successfully reduced wildfire hotspots by 67.2%, covering more than 49,000 rai across 27 communities in Chiang Rai Province, while generating a remarkable Social Return on Investment (SROI) of 1:5.02.

This research serves as a tangible example of Research Synergy, demonstrating how the integration of indigenous wisdom and scientific knowledge can foster economic value and improve the well-being of communities and Thai society. The achievement strongly aligns with the vision of the School of Liberal Arts, which is committed to cultivating humanity and empowering intellect for sustainable development.

ผลงานที่ได้รับรางวัลคือ “นิเวศปัญญาชุมชนชาติพันธุ์เพื่อสิ่งแวดล้อมที่ยั่งยืน” โดย ผู้ช่วยศาสตราจารย์ ดร.สุวิชาน พัฒนาไพรวัลย์ อาจารย์ประจำสำนักวิชาศิลปศาสตร์ และหัวหน้าหน่วยวิจัยนิเวศปัญญาชาติพันธุ์และชนพื้นเมืองเพื่อการพัฒนาที่ยั่งยืน ซึ่งนำเสนอแนวคิดสำคัญว่า “ประเทศไทยไม่ได้ล้มเหลวในการดับไฟป่า แต่ล้มเหลวในการเข้าใจไฟ” ผ่านการบูรณาการภูมิปัญญาของชุมชนชาติพันธุ์ร่วมกับองค์ความรู้ทางวิทยาศาสตร์ เชื่อมโยงชุมชน 3 ลุ่มน้ำ 27 ชุมชน ภายใต้แนวคิด Indigenous Fire Stewardship จนสามารถลดจุดความร้อน (Hotspot) ได้ร้อยละ 67.2 ครอบคลุมพื้นที่กว่า 49,000 ไร่ ใน 27 ชุมชน จังหวัดเชียงราย และสร้างผลตอบแทนทางสังคม (Social Return on Investment: SROI) สูงถึง 1 : 5.02

งานวิจัยนี้คือตัวอย่างรูปธรรมของแนวคิด “Research Synergy” ที่การผสานพลังแห่งภูมิปัญญาและองค์ความรู้ทางวิทยาศาสตร์สามารถสร้างสรรค์เศรษฐกิจและความเป็นอยู่ที่ดีแก่ชุมชนและสังคมไทย สอดคล้องกับวิสัยทัศน์ของสำนักวิชาศิลปศาสตร์ ที่มุ่งมั่นในการบ่มเพาะความเป็นมนุษย์และจุดประกายทางปัญญาเพื่อการพัฒนาที่ยั่งยืน
